Dean Jones admits Kings’ shortcomings in Qalandars’ defeat

Karachi Kings’ Head Coach Dean Jones has admitted that his side got their options wrong after suffering a defeat at the hands of Lahore Qalandars, in the ongoing Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL), on Sunday.

Ben Dunk’s scintillating 99 not out, which included 12 sixes, the most in an HBL PSL innings, spearheaded an eight-wicket win for Lahore Qalandars over arch-rivals Karachi at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

“Maybe we got our options wrong a little bit. We could have gone for Ifti [Iftikhar Ahmed] for one [over] but not at the end but sometimes that’s the way things go and we backed Delport, who bowled couple of good overs early,” said Jones in a press conference after the match.

Substitute fielder Mohammad Rizwan dropped Dunk’s catch, when he was on 11 off Cameron Delport’s bowling, which went on to have a major say on the outcome of the match.

“They needed 90 off the last seven and if you drop catches that’s what going to happen,” he said.

Jones also praised Dunk’s special knock while stating that this was the kind of match his side needed to have in the context of the tournament.

“This is probably the game we needed to have. We needed to be put under pressure,” he said. “That was a terrific game of cricket, Ben Dunk was outstanding. He played one of the greatest knocks in PSL history.”

He also mentioned things that did not go his side’s way over the course of the match.

“Things did not go our way. One of our guys [Aamer Yamin] did his hamstring early which cost us two overs. If he had bowled his two overs out, who would know.”

“We can’t go into matches just with five bowlers. You need to have six bowlers or maybe even seven,” he added. “It was also very dewy out there which made things hard for us.”
