Karachi medical student dies after being caught in cross-fire between police and robbers

A final-year medical student, Nimrah Baig, was shot dead on Friday night as she got caught in an exchange of fire between police and suspected robbers in the metropolis’ North Karachi locality.

According to police, officers were chasing a group of robbers, who were fleeing the area after looting, when they started firing at them at Anda Mor. The police retaliated and Nimrah who was passing by from the area was shot in her head during the cross-fire, officials said.

The 22-year-old was rushed to Jinnah Hospital where she passed away. Police claim the medical student was hit by a bullet fired by the robbers. A suspected robber identified as Riaz Malik was also killed during the cross-fire.

Nimrah’s uncle said the family wants a post-mortem to be conducted to ascertain whose bullet hit the 22-year-old.

SSP Central Arif Rao assured that the incident will be thoroughly investigated.

Moreover, the doctor who operated on Nimrah said her X-rays and CT Scans were done but the bullet could not be found in the body. Nimrah suffered head damage as a bone in her head broke, the doctor added.

“It is likely that she was shot from a small weapon, however, it is hard to ascertain until a post-mortem is conducted,” the doctor further said.
