Asia Bibi leaves Pakistan for Canada after blasphemy acquittal

Asia Bibi, who spent 8 years on death row after being convicted of blasphemy, has left the country, officials have confirmed.

There were reports that some of her family members are in Canada, now it has been officially confirmed that she has left for Canada.

Bibi was convicted of blasphemy and sentenced to death in 2010 by a trial court. She later moved the Lahore High Court against the execution sentence, however, the court had upheld the verdict.

Her conviction was overturned last year by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Earlier, her lawyer Saif-ul-Malook claimed that Asia’s two daughters left Pakistan in secret and flew to Canada in December last year after accepting an offer of asylum by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Ottawa is a leading contender to give the whole family asylum.

Asia Bibi, who was born in 1971 and has four children, was the first woman to be sentenced to death under the blasphemy laws.

She was originally convicted in 2010 after being accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a row with her neighbours, and spent eight years on death row.

She has always maintained her innocence.

Christians make up just 1.6% of the 200 million-plus population of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
