Pakistan needs to do the impossible to stay in World Cup 2019

With England beating both India and New Zealand, Pakistan need a miracle against Bangladesh at Lord’s in London on Friday to keep their outside chances of reaching the semi-finals alive

England scored 305 for 8 and then bowled out New Zealand for 186 in 45 overs. They are the third team to qualify for the semi-finals after India and Australia. England ends their group stage with 12 points at number 3 on the points table.

New Zealand is currently at number 4 and has ended their group stage campaign at 11 points. They should be the fourth semi-finalist unless Pakistan comes up with a record-breaking win against Bangladesh on Friday.

Pakistan must beat the world record ODI cricket win (290 runs) to make it to the World Cup semi-final.

The full permutations are as follows:

  • If Pakistan scores 350, they must win by 311 runs.
  • If Pakistan scores 400, they must win by 316 runs.
  • If Pakistan scores 450, they must win by 321 runs.
  • If Bangladesh wins the toss and chooses to bat, Pakistan is out before even a ball has been bowled.

Pakistan are currently on 9 points from 8 matches with 4 wins, 3 losses and one washout. Their current net run rate sits at -0.792 while New Zealand are at 0.175. They have made a remarkable comeback in the tournament after a poor start to their campaign. There has been a fascinating similarity in their journey to the knockouts in the 1992 World Cup and their remarkable fightback in the 2019 World Cup.

Pakistan lost three of their first five matches before registering three consecutive wins over South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan.

Can Pakistan do the impossible at Lord’s on Friday?
