Imam arrested for over dozen child rapes in Bangladesh

Al Amin, teacher and founder of the Baitul Huda Cadet Madrassa at Fatulla outside Dhaka, claimed innocence by saying he was “possessed by Satan”.

Police from the Rapid Action Batallion (RAB) arrested the teacher on Thursday right after the mother of a 10 year old student filed a rape case against him.

Local RAB Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Samser Uddin said that the 10 year old girl told her mother that the founder did the same to her while watching a news regarding sexual assault on TV.

The teacher later admitted that he forcibly had sexual intercourse with at least 12 girls in the Madrassa.

People are protesting and demanding punishment of the Imam.

Rights groups raised concerns about the increase in number of rape and sexual assaults in the Muslim majority.

A group of local rights, The Manusher Jonno Foundation published a report saying, 433 children were raped in 2018 aged between 7-12.

A “culture of impunity” is partly to blame for the rise in sexual violence in the country, said the Rights groups.
