Do we consider Education a priority?

A while ago Chairperson of HEC Mr Banuri was removed without any solid justification. He went to the court & filed an appeal claiming his rights were violated. The court agreed & rightfully commanded HEC to place him back again, effective immediately.

Till now we have little clue as to why Mr Banuri was removed! Let’s focus on a different aspect, for almost 2 years now due to the obvious reasons, education sector has stayed the most affected. There are issues which the government talks about but it feels as if the one’s to talk on are simply ignored or long forgotten. Sometimes it feels as if the government is either too blind or has permanently chosen to shut its eyes & ears.

Every year the budget is released but there’s no explanation as to why the education sector isn’t getting the required & rightful portion of it.  Already Covid has made everything a joke & all of us together are too busy in making a fool out of ourselves only. Talk about salary raise, protection of the teachers, talk about adequate and latest technology & tools. Talk about training, material, curriculum. Everything is a mess!

Initially, we were surviving. But are we even doing that anymore? They say if you want to destroy a nation, corrupt their education system. A study was conducted by the faculty in AKU which proved that more than 90% of the students are weak in Mathematics & Sciences. Subjects once we were the masters & champions on! Subjects we were known well for. Where’s the needed & rightful funding for research & development? Shouldn’t higher education be subsidised? With prices of everything going through the roof we expect the government to atleast subsidise education but turns out they themselves are in dire need of funds.

Time & again government has told us ‘education is our priority.’ They have tried to ingrain that in our minds but let’s take a step back & think- are their actions in sync with their lip service? You’ll get your own answers. Higher education is getting expensive by the day & if we continue to keep doing what we are presently busy with, then students committing suicide’s, dropping out or simply failing subjects should not startle us…
