What are Antihistamines?
Antihistamines are drugs that are used to treat allergic rhinitis, common cold, influenza and other allergies. They are effective at relieving the itch caused by the release of histamine (a compound which is released by cells in response to injury and in allergic inflammatory reactions causing contraction of smooth muscle and dilation of capillaries).
How do Antihistamines work?
Antihistamines work by blocking the effect of histamine in our body, it helps to block something harmful like an infection that may cause swelling in the blood vessels and skin, and helps protect the body. They physically block these receptors and stop histamine reaching its target. This results in the decrease of our body’s reaction to allergens and help to reduce the symptoms that cause allergy. It usually takes between 30 minutes to 2 hours for an antihistamine to start effecting.
Which foods contain Antihistamine?
Some foods and plants are natural containers of antihistamines. Sometimes prescribed antihistamine medications are effective for symptom relief in the body but they can cause some side effects that may include nausea or drowsiness. Because of this reason, some people are more inclined towards taking natural alternatives.
1. Vitamin C
It helps boost the immune system and acts as a natural antihistamine. Researchers have observed that high doses of intravenous vitamin C resulted in reducing allergy symptoms.
Kiwi fruits, cauliflower, citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli and tomatoes are a few of the natural carriers of vitamin C.
2. Butterbur
It is a plant extract from a shrub that is found in Asia, Europe and some parts of North America. Butterbur is used to treat migraines and hay fever; also known as allergic rhinitis.
3. Bromelain
It is an enzyme found in the core of pineapple and is also available as a supplement. It is a natural remedy for swelling or inflammation specially for sinuses and following injuries or surgeries.
4. Probiotics
These are microorganisms that may offer benefits to health by helping our body maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria. Probiotics may boost the immune system that helps the body fight off allergies.
5. Quercetin
It is an antioxidant that is found in many plants and foods. Addition of quercetin to one’s diet may help relieve allergy symptoms. It is naturally present in apples, berries, grapes, black tea, green tea, peppers, red onions and some other naturally found foods and plants.
