Regular running or jogging has many health benefits. Running can:
- help to build strong bones, as it is a weight bearing exercise
- strengthen muscles
- improve cardiovascular fitness
- burn plenty of kilojoules
- help maintain a healthy weight.
If you want to run or jog you should set goals to:
- Get fit – if you’re a beginner, you should start with brisk walking & then jump towards jogging & running. This should take a few months.
- General fitness – incorporate your running with other forms of exercise such as swimming or team sports so that you can maximise your overall fitness.
- Weight loss – include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, wholegrain cereals and low-fat dairy products in your diet. Cut down dietary fats, takeaway foods, soft drinks and sugar.
- Competition – Join a local club to combine running with the challenge of navigating through various environments. This would help you keep up on your toes!
Your diet should be very healthy & you should avoid eating directly before going for a run. After running take a little break & drink plenty of water, set a timer. See if you have increased your pace, if yes, check by how much. If using an iPod or headset, do not have the music too loud – stay alert and aware
