Last year in August, few pictures were leaked from the sets, where Donald Glover, Rihanna, and Atlanta director Hiro Murai being filmed in Cuba.
Since then only a few details have trickled out, but the release of what we now know is a movie. Guava Island is a new movie that Glover developed with New Regency Film. It’s set to debut at Coachella, the day before Childish Gambino’s headlining festival set.
The film was shot over four weeks in Cuba and is said to be a “musically driven hour-long film” described as a “tropical thriller.” It as “an expansion of Glover’s idea of freedom.”
The film was written by Glover’s brother, Stephen, and directed by Hiro Murai, who has been a collaborator with Glover on several projects, including “This is America.” This will be Murai’s feature film directorial debut.
Guava Island will stream free on Amazon Prime in over 200 countries for 18 hours.
