Explanation of Covid19 name

Covid-19 is an acronym for coronavirus disease 2019 that was given by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the disease caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

The disease was named on February 11.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the name was chosen on the basis of it not referring to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease.

“Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatising. It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks,” he added.
