Facebook meets PTA to discuss Social Media rules!

On the 29th of June, a delegation from Facebook held a virtual meeting with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to discuss the Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules 2020, and to propose recommendations as part of an ongoing consultation process.

Facebook representatives highlighted in the meeting that the rules should be: strive for greater transparency on content restricted in Pakistan; preserve citizens’ right to freedom of expression as guaranteed under Pakistan’s Constitution; incorporate due process requirements; and develop an independent oversight mechanism as required by PECA, PTA official told Research Snipers.

We are glad to see Pakistan government finally taking social media and cyberspace seriously, the telecom authority previously advised companies to get their VPNs registered before June 30th. The government of Pakistan is also keen to bring large tech companies to Pakistan including Amazon, Facebook, PayPal, Twitter, and others.
