A meteor, also known as a meteoroid, is a space rock that penetrates Earth’s atmosphere. The resistance—or drag—of the air on the space rock causes it to become incredibly heated as it falls toward the ground. They’re usually referred to as “shooting stars.” The light streak, according to NASA, is not the rock, but rather the shimmering hot air as the hot rock zips through the Earth’s atmosphere. A “meteor shower” occurs when Earth encounters a large number of meteoroids at the same time.
