On Wednesday something unusual happened in New Zealand parliament. Six-week-year-old son of New Zealand politician was seen being cuddled by his father when the speaker of the assembly offered to hold him.
According to Reuters, Trevor Mallard the house speaker stated that “There are times when I can be vaguely useful”.
The house speaker has relaxed rules in the house, as far as parenting is concerned and made it more children friendly. More than a dozen parliamentarians have infants and last year Jacinda Ardern became the first female Prime Minister to give birth while elected. This has set an example to understand the dynamics of parenting at work.
Prime Minister daughter, Neve Te Aroha was all over the news when she accompanied her mother in New York at the United Nations General Assembly.
Reuters reported that, in New Zealand, few people get the same rights to manage workload and parenting, but the people hope that these examples will allow others as well to have flexible working conditions.
Mallard stated “What I’ve found is that it adds to the positive atmosphere of the workplace,” he also added that, if we encourage others to this as well, it will not only increase the positivity but will also make the environment more friendly.
