Pakistan among four most climate change affected countries: Amin Aslam

Adviser to Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam on Wednesday said Pakistan is among the four most Climate Change affected countries.

Speaking at the national consultative workshop ” Mapping the role of civil society in Climate Action” by Civil Society Coalition for Climate Change (CSCCC), he said the country was bearing millions of rupees loss every year due to the occurrence of disastrous earthquake, floods and drought prevailing at massive part of land, said a press release.

“Pakistan during the last 20 years has bore the brunt of US$ 14 billion hence the second country in the world in terms bearing heavy damages owing to climate change,” he said.

He added that it was a significant amount of capital for Pakistan as it could be spent for education, health, reducing poverty and development projects.

Amin Aslam said the ministry of climate change in compliance of Prime Minister’s austerity derive took the smallest ever delegation of 8 members for participating in the 24th conference of parties (COP-24) under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Katowice, Poland.

He went on saying that the ministry with such measures managed to save over Rs 20 million and despite being the shortest delegation highlighted the country’s endeavours for mitigating climate change risks.

“Pakistan is the least polluter in terms of global air pollution, however despite the fact our country is leading other countries for taking steps in the preservation of environment and implementing environmental laws,” he said.

He informed that the ministry of climate change has imposed ban on crop residual burning and strictly directed the brick kiln owners to convert their furnaces over zigzag technology.

“These initiatives yielded positive and promising results as the Smog prevalence duration reduced to merely 2 days from 20 days.
