Activist and model Mama Cax’s passing has left the entertainment industry heartbroken. Her death was confirmed in a post uploaded on her official Instagram account on Friday as reported by E! News. “It is with deep regret and immense sadness that we announce the passing of Cacsmy Brutus (Mama Cax). Mama Cax spent the past week in the hospital, and unfortunately, on Monday, December 16, 2019, she left this world” the post reads.
“To say Cax was a fighter would be an understatement. As a cancer survivor, she had grown accustomed to taking on life’s several challenges head on and successfully. It is with that same grit (fervor) that she fought her last days on Earth.” it continued.
Several personalities from both the music and fashion community took to social media to pay their respects. “A queen. A force. A powerhouse beauty that brought her strength to the @savagexfenty stage this year inspiring so many across the globe,” Popstar Rihanna wrote on her Instagram account. She ended her post with “Rest In Power sis”.
Plus size models Hunter Mcgrady and Tess Holiday took to social media on her active role as an inclusive fashion advocate. “We lost a fierce, beautiful, intelligent, game changer today. Cax your spirit filled every room and your story inspired millions” Mcgrady said. “Your style was effortless and you never let anything stand in your way” Mcgrady added as she shared a photo of hers with Cax.
Holiday went on to share a personal anecdote. “The last time I spoke to you we were on FaceTime and I told you about my recent changes in my life, you showered me with love as you always did, and then scolded me when I told you that I hadn’t eaten that day and wasn’t sleeping enough, and I laughed and told you “God! You’re always being my mom!!!” because that was you, you were a nurturer” she said “You loved hard, your sense of humor was untouchable, your passion was electric, and the work you did on this earth, the lives you touched, the visibility you brought to this world, your beautiful words of strength and standing firm for what you believe… that will be your legacy. Rest now Mama Cax, we will keep fighting for you” Holiday added.
British actor Jameel Jamil went on to criticize the NHS for not being able to cater Cax properly. “My beautiful friend was the most extraordinary role model. Mama Cax was a cancer survivor, model, amputee, and activist. She was sent home TWICE prematurely by our underfunded NHS and died in her hotel room. This happens so often now in the UK, especially to young black women” she tweeted.
Cax was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 14. Her right leg was amputated after she underwent an unsuccessful hip replacement. The cause of Cax’s is death is yet to be determined.
