Senior citizens…

Pakistan has about 10 million elderly people living in its population. It’s a pressing issue, rather a dark side of the society.

A new and absurd trend has emerged, which is that of abandoning the senior citizens. In winters alone a number of elderly were seen begging & sleeping under the bridge in the freezing cold. Where are our morals and etiquettes?

Our elders took care of us, brought us up, fed & clothes us, educated us. They were there all step of the way & now when it’s our turn to re-pay them we look for elderly welfare & shelter houses. Is that really what they expected from us? They spend 3/4th of their lives in ensuring that we have everything and suddenly when the elders want a shoulder, our youth doesn’t have time and take them as an added pressure.

The elders deserve respect and empathy. They should be treated the way they used to treat the young in their hour of need. Let’s hope we see a changing pattern and trend or else we’ve really failed as a nation!
