The Ego’s Sneaky Role in Relationships and Life

What exactly is the ego? It’s that little inner voice that tends to stir up worry, anxiety, and suffering. One of its favorite pastimes? Constantly comparing ourselves to others. Unfortunately, this habit often leads to feeling inadequate when we don’t measure up to our own past achievements. Our ego can be quite harsh, impacting our self-worth in the process.

The damage caused by this unnecessary ego doesn’t stop at self-esteem. It has a knack for wreaking havoc on our relationships. In fact, a significant percentage of breakups and divorces can be attributed to toxic egos. On the flip side, individuals who actively combat this ego-driven toxicity tend to lead more grounded and satisfying lives.

So, how do we keep our egos in check? It starts with remaining calm and open to what others have to say. After all, nobody’s perfect, and there’s always room for growth.

As an example closer to home, think about how many of us seek endless validation and attention on social media, collecting those fake internet points, all in an attempt to avoid the uncertainty that comes with undertaking difficult and frightening creative endeavors. Pakistani creatives, just like anyone else, sometimes fall into this trap. It’s crucial to silence that ego and dive into the work required, no matter how daunting it may seem.

Here’s a simple mantra to adopt: “If love didn’t create it, it’s not real.” By shifting your perspective, you can break free from the fear that holds you back, and you might be surprised at the solutions that emerge when you confront the void head-on.
