Does insomnia cause heart attack?

Insomnia is a condition of sleeplessness that has effected so many people around the world. It causes a lot of problems such as irritability, anxiety or stress. Taking maximum 7-8 hours of sleep is a must because it can lighten up your mood, lift up the energy level and improves the performance at work.

However, recent research shows, that people having insomnia have a greater risk of heart attack and coronary heart disease. Researchers from the UK and Sweden have conducted this research based on the genetic and health information collected.

Previous studies carried out on the link between insomnia and heart diseases have resulted in the findings that there are almost 250 genetic variants, each of which slightly increases the risk of having insomnia. Prof. Hugh Markus, co-author of the research at the University of Cambridge said that some people have these variants in a small number, some have so many, while others do not have at all.

So if this is the case, then if we try to overcome insomnia, will that reduce the risk of a heart attack? The researchers could not really find a direct connection between a heart stroke and insomnia.  As Michael Holmes, of the Oxford University, who’s also an expert in the field of genetics said that it is still unclear if genetic variants are responsible for increasing the risk of heart strokes.

The research is not yet supported by a strong conclusion. Hence, people having genetic variants that make people insomniac, also raises the risk of coronary heart disease in them. If this is further proven in researches, then we may work on reducing sleep disorder to prevent any such disease.
