Justice delayed for Noor Muqaddam

For the umpteenth time, Noor Muqaddam’s bleeding, headless corpse had dragged the desi male privilege out in the open last July. It was difficult for anyone to stomach the fact that a family well aware of their spoiled son’s criminal activities chose to look the other way as a woman was murdered in the most heinous manner possible, inside a house in the poshest suburbs of the capital, and that too, right under the noses of domestic staff. But, if last year’s show of ego excess was bad, the last few weeks have done a fantastic job of putting on the charades for the privileges of wealth in a country like ours. First, Zahir Jaffer’s lawyer used the tried-and-true tactic of dousing the victim in the most heinous of charges. Choosing her wretched father to testify in court may not have been an easy decision, because even the darkest of hearts include a glimmer of conscience. But, for lack of a better description, the ongoing insanity appeal puts the icing on Zahir’s well-deserved cake. What better place to flee to than the arms of a comfortable mental facility, which can quickly transform into a five-star resort hotel (thank you, limitless wads of family money)? In the midst of the slick deception around a crime that could not be more obvious, the court has suddenly deemed Mr Jaffer medically fit. Meanwhile, he alternates between a shackled chair and a shabby stretched position. If things continue this way, the accused may make his next court appearance with tubes down his neck. His petty antics are merely adding salt to the wounds of not only Noor’s parents, but the entire nation, which is still reeling from the shock. Despite the fact that the judiciary is making all the proper actions, the sooner it concludes this case and pounds the gavel, the better for the gender crimes debate that is raging in all corners. We’ve had far more than our fair share of second-class individuals fall victim to the system. Last year November, PEMRA released a cctv footage, it circulated all over the internet and now just yesterday the news came out that there are no CCTV footages which can prove that Zahir Jaffer is guilty of the accused crime. Can we believe its 2022 already and the case that started july 2021 has not come to its final verdict.
