Riz Ahmed starrer, Sound of Metal made its way to the Zurich International Film Festival and won big.
The film, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, won the Golden Eye for Best Film at 2019’s ZIFF.
Sound of Metal, directed by Darius Marder, revolves around a drummer (played by Ahmed) who has to deal with sudden loss of hearing. This was Darius’ debut feature as well.
According to Riz, “The film asks the question, ‘Who are you?’ when everything you thought you were is stripped away from you.”
For getting into the character, Riz had to “learn how to play the drums, learn sign language and immerse myself in both the musicians community and the Deaf community.
