The Russo-Ukrainian war.

In order to understand why Russia has invaded Ukraine, let’s get to the bottom of it.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a military operation in Ukraine on Thursday with explosions heard across the country and its foreign minister warning a “full-scale invasion” was underway.

This invasion could be the start of war in Europe. The tensions between Russia and Ukraine exacerbated when US President Joe Biden was urged by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to join NATO. This angered Russia and the former Soviet state started sending troops near Ukrainian border for ‘’training exercises’’. The number of soldiers for it kept increasing! This commotion was a clear indication that Russia had planned to invade Ukraine & President Joe Biden warned Russia of severe sanctions if it did invade Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin never truly accepted Ukraine & said it has always been a puppet of the west. They denied Ukraine of being a proper state anyway. Even though both parties have cultural and social ties but all of these were weakened when Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014. They did this when its pro-Russian president was deposed in early 2014. The war in the east has since claimed more than 14,000 lives.

The new tension and invasion for sure will have consequences and repercussions for the EU and hence-worth most of EU (which are NATO signatories) sided with US in sanctioning Russia.

Russia however bold as ever invaded little Ukraine by land, air and sea firing missiles on cities. A number of neighbouring countries have geared up to take in large number of refugees as they are fleeing their own nation. EU, UK and other allies have vowed to impose strict sanctions on Russia.

“These are among the darkest hours of Europe since the Second World War,” EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said.
