The teenager won the best new artist, the song of the year for “Bad Guy,” record of the year for “Bad Guy,” and album of the year for “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”
The last and only time an artist won all four of these awards was Christopher Cross in 1981. The 29-year-old Texan rocker won big for his self-titled LP, which controversially beat Pink Floyd’s iconic “The Wall” and for its standout song “Sailing.” It was the peak of his critical and commercial success, Insider reported.
Eilish, who had already won earlier in the evening for the best pop vocal album, seemed genuinely surprised and even a little irritated when she accepted her four major awards.
According to Insider, the genre-bending artist even said that she wanted Ariana Grande to win instead. Eilish co-wrote her debut album, released in March 2019, alongside her older brother and producer, Finneas O’Connell. The siblings recorded nearly the entire album in O’Connell’s childhood bedroom.
Eilish was 17 when the Grammy nominations were announced in December, making her the youngest artist in history to be nominated for all four major Grammy Awards. Now, at just 18 years old, she has broken Taylor Swift’s record as the youngest artist in history to win album of the year.
